Brass process

Have you ever thought about how doorknobs and musical instruments and other shiny things are shiny? It's really interesting! They are made of a special kind of metal known as brass. The only metal that is unique and formed with two different metals is brass. They mix together through a process is called the brass process, producing the shiny metal we are familiar with in many items.

How Brass is Made

One of the new materials we created is brass, the metal used to manufacture a lot of different things we see and touch on a daily basis. Brass is made by heating copper and zinc together. This mixing takes place in a large oven known as a furnace. Inside the furnace, temperatures reach such extremes that metals melt and fuse. The copper and zinc harmonize when melted, resulting in a shiny liquid. This is key — enabling the two metals to fuse into a new single material. Then, it is poured into molds, which are the shapes the mixture takes after it has been completely melted. Molds are big tools that hold the brass to shape it.
